Subject: Convention Wrap-up

Dear Colleagues:

All of us returned from Las Vegas feeling that we participated in a truly historic convention. Ready for the Future has created a lot of energy and excitement while forcing us to confront tough issues.

On behalf of the Executive Board, I want to let you know how much we appreciate the role each local has played in this process and commit to you that we will stick with our commitments as we move forward. The Las Vegas convention was not an end to this process but was a first important step. It was important not simply because we adopted the ten-point agenda and the Strategic Industry Fund, it was important because we debated together what we need to do in these challenging and critical times. It was important because our convention reaffirmed for each us that we are committed to working together to figure out our future democratically.

We are more committed than ever to democratic change. We are more committed than ever to working together as we build our bargaining power and build CWA. Each of you and your participation in our convention are a testimonial to that commitment and we thank you.

In the week before the convention, 9,100 flight attendants at Northwest Airlines joined CWA, and we beat back an attempt to wreck the contract and benefits for 35,000 state worker members in New Jersey after nearly all our members were laid off when the budget expired. We have huge turning points ahead in each of our key industries and fall elections that could change the direction of the U.S. Congress.

We cannot guarantee great results in every case, but we can guarantee that we will work harder and fight harder knowing that at the 2006 convention we recommitted to building CWA at every workplace, employer and industry.

I hope that you and all of our CWA families enjoy the summer and take inspiration from the amazing accomplishments of CWA members.

In Solidarity,

Larry Cohen
President
